Delrin just might be the perfect material for making trumpet yelpers, but it is a mess to turn. Several friends, all very respected, well-known trumpet yelper builders also think highly of delrin. Even though I have a wood bias, I have never made a wood trumpet yelper that sounded any better than the delrin trumpet pictured here. The word has gotten out about delrin. This one is on its way to its new home in Georgia.
I had a gentleman ask me today why I charged the same price for delrin as I charged for wood. Delrin is a cheaper material; but it takes me 3x the amount of time to turn and 3x the amount of time to sand and polish. Not including the mess it makes in my shop and the number of times I have to stop and start my lathe to clear things so I can see what I'm doing....LOL!!!
BTW, that delrin trumpet yelper is definitely under there...........
