Ghosts of New York
May 27, 2025, 08:19:07 PM
Decided to make New York my final appearance of the 25 turkey season.
Been hunting NY for 5 days. Have yet to even hear a bird. I've seen very few riding around. I'd say I've put 300 mikes riding around. I've seen 6 birds. I've seen sign. But zero gobbles. None. It's rained several days. It's been cool. But still, no excuse not to hear one. At least hear one a mile away. I talked to a few other hunters, same thing. No gobbling.
I'm gonna assume the New York birds are ghosts. They there, just can't see or hear them. Craziness

It's been a common theme in the Mid- Atlantic states this spring. For some reason, they decided that they didn't wanna talk much unless you could get within 100 yards of them. Then they would at least think about it. A cannon blast wouldn't get them to gobble outside of that circle.

X10 here, I was lucky enough to get inside their circle on a few. Very weird season, took tremendous patience, and covering ground to be successful this year.

I tagged out with two nice adult toms by the 7th. The first one came in with two others, gobbling heads off, the second bird sneaked in after gobbling only once from 400 yards out... I've heard many fellow hunters' stories about birds sneaking in quietly.

Quietest season I have seen in this century up here in New England. Quiet birds and extra spooky. Maybe they are ghosts

Worked a couple. Called one in for a friend who wanted to get a bird with his bow.Tom caught him moving. Last week had a nice one coming in till his girlfriend got jealous and took him away. I considered the season a success being population is down. Three days left and its not over till it's over. Good day.

They were ghosts today. I heard a hen and my buddy saw some hens but not a gobble. Cold temps and a light rain did not help the situation. We'll be back out in the morning.

The Catskill region was a tough one for me as well. We teamed up on a Jake earlier in the season. We were only on em a couple times this spring and it didn't workout.
I did my best to close out the season but the four days of straight rain last week didn't help us. Today's morning drizzle and fog made it the same. Ghost birds.

I heard 1 gobble in 9 days. He gobbled 3 times and stopped before 5:15 am. Pretty common. I put about 1500 miles on my truck in that 9 days riding. I did see some birds in fields.(weather was not great). None I had access to.
