Ok guys I haven't been on here in a while but maybe yall can shed some light for me.
For clarity Im 60 Ive turkey huntedfor nearing 20 years so I'm not inexperienced. Ive lost count but I figure its near or over 30  birds killed .
this year I have hunted my butt off. seems like ive not been able to get any real commitment from the gobblers.
Various mouth calls, wingbone, slate, box .. you name it I've used it this year.

I feel like my calling has been better this year than ever .. (apparently the birds dont agree)
Yesterday I went out for an afternoon/evening hunt and at 4:00 I picked up my box call out of boredom and decided to play with it . I actually was gonna adjust the rollover via the screw. anyway I yawked on it about 8 times and a goobler answered . I thought my mind was playing tricks so i hit it again and got another response.
Not sure but I wanna say he was 400 yards awy too .. barley could hear him.  well after about 5 -6 mins i hit it again and he answered closer. i sat the call down and got ready so after some time i hit it agian and he had made up over half that distance. I knew he was comming so I waited a while more and hit it very lightly and   he was just over the hill.   5 mins later that big ole white head popped up and then i see the fan. boom hes down 30 yards. Id say he's a 2 year old . 10" beard   1" spurs.. very heavy.
Ok I said all that to ask.. what the bleep. ive had multiple classic encounters this year where the turkeys just went the other way. speaking with other guys here in north Ga it seems like their getting the same.
Do turkeys just have weird years?.   only thing Im wondering is that box was very high pitched and it was later in the afternoon.  wondering if my beautiful calling is too beautiful. like ive been very reserved if one is on the roost gobbling. just giving them very soft sweet calls. not overdoing it. but im wondering if im sounding more like a jake ?   i know yall cant hear me but maybe my sweet beautiful calling isnt as sweet as im thinking.  can we get caught up with what we think our hen sounds like and get away from correct?..
Anyway . bird down and the monkey is off my back. sorry for the long post. not even sure i m asking what Im thinking correctly.

The box call worked because it sounded like a turkey.  If I were you I'd keep using just like you did yesterday.

Best advice I can give you and what I do is listen to REAL hens calling.
Do NOT listen to champion callers,  call makers or YouTube rs.  Only listen to REAL live turkey hens.

Another thing timing. The best hunting is yet to come. Remember May is always better than April.

You may be right on the box call sound. ive called many with the mouth calls over the years. usually that's all i take with me. I need to record my self. Ive lost confidence with it. Maybe what im hearing in my head isn't what's actually projecting.  Could be I've just hit on some hard to call turks.

When I find a call that works, I just go with it.

Competition calling is just that. People trying to please people. I ain't knocking it but there is far more to calling in and killing a gobbler than pretty calling. There are plenty of guys that are pure poison on turkeys that would never place in a calling contest. We should all strive to be the best we can at all aspects of the game and not just one part.
