my son is roughly 5 feet tall.  his rubber hunting boots are heavy and stiff.  we are going to texas to hunt this year and will probably be doing a lot of walking
looking for some snake gaiters that won't break the bank and going to get him some hiking boots
looking at turtleskin but they are expensive. but i'd rather pay $200 and him be protected if he gets a strike

any suggestions?

I'd just go for the turtle skins. There may be a new option but they were the best when I bought mine several years ago.

I am all for wearing snake protection. I never did until a few years ago when I realized that I was now old and slow. And I hope you find something for your son you are both confident with.

I just thought I'd share some statistics from a snakebite survey in 2016....

The most common site of injury was the distal upper extremity, with 4884 (44%) of snakebites affecting the wrist, hand, or fingers. In the lower extremity, 1751 (16%) snakebites occurred in the knee or lower leg, whereas 3351 (30%) of snakebites occurred in the ankle or foot. There were 2423 (22%) patients admitted as an inpatient, and <10 (0%) patients died.

Good luck and keep an eye pealed!

I highly recommend the turtle Skin gaiters.  I wear them with regular lace up hunting boots and over my rubber boots,  If there a little big on  your son for now until he grows into them you can zip them up as far as the go, then fold the rest of the gaiter over.

I have a pair of youth/ladies snake chaps.  They may be a little hot, but if you pay the ride they are yours!
