Rossi Tuffy Turkey 410 Won’t Eject

Well I bought a brand new Rossi tuffy turkey in 410. I went out to test it today and put some standard lead 2 3/4 to start. First shot out didn't eject. After ramming it out I shot a second and this one ejected. So then I put in some apex turkey ninja and shot it. It didn't eject then the next 2 would not either. Upon firing they were all extremely tight in the chamber and I had to really ram them out.

Before anyone asks - I did clean the gun prior to ever shooting it. With no shell in it, the ejector pops and works fine.  It seems to be an issue with the heavier loads and chamber size. I googled it and have seen a few with similar issues and also had a friend with the same problem last year but the shop he bought it from gave him a replacement. Unfortunately I ordered mine online.

My next steps are obviously going to be to contact Rossi but I'm pretty pissed given the youth opener in IL is end of month and I doubt they can get me a fix in that time. I guess this is my lesson on ordering cheap guns.

Curious if anyone here has run into the same issue and if there happened to be a DIY fix or if you sent it for repair, what was the turnaround?

RiverBuck

My sons does that sometimes. I haven't figured out a fix. I could send it back to Rossi but it doesn't seem to change anything accuracy related so we just run it. He's killed a couple turkey with it.. like you, I'm not happy about it but it's a cheap shotgun. I only bought it because length of pull fit him. Knowing what I know now I'd have bought the Steven's 301.
It served its purpose and now I'm trying to transition him to the pistol grip SA-28.

I had a few shells that did that the first shooting session with mine. I had polished the barrel before, but not the chamber. I polished the chamber with 0000 steel wool and it has worked ever since. The machining from the factory was the roughest I've ever seen on a gun, but the polishing cleaned it up fine now.

Have you put the apexs thru it since you polished it by chance?

I have run Ninjas, Burgess Creek, and Boss Tom loads since with no issues. All eject fine.

Ok good deal. I appreciate the information. I'm waiting for Rossi to call me back. If they can't offer a timely solution I'll be attempting your steel wool polish.

Let us know what they say, hopefully will have decent customer service and make it right.

mdmitchell

Well I just wanted to report back on a few things here.

-Rossis customer service is non existent. I sat on hold for over 60 minutes twice and no one ever spoke to me before I gave up. You can request a call back which they did call me back but 2 days later after 5 pm and they left no message or number to call back.  If you miss the call, you're back in line.

-on a tip from a buddy I gave a call to Erik at kinetic gunwerks and explained the issue I was having and he said it was likely the hulls on the apex being the problem. He said he used fiocchi which is of more consistent and isn't over sized like cheddite or whatever apex uses. Anyways I ended up ordering 2 boxes from him which he promptly shipped that day and had them to my door in 2 days.

-I made it out to try them and the first thing I did was shoot the apex to confirm it was still sticking and 3 shots of it did not eject. I had tried polishing the chamber with steel wool as mentioned above so wanted to test that.

I threw in the KGW loads next and they ejected perfectly. So I breathed a sigh of relief and proceeded to pattern and make a few adjustments to my red dot. Then for fun when I got it where I wanted I decided to shoot a few more apex since hell I already had burnt thru 6 out of 10. To my surprise, the next 3 shots of Apex all ejected fine.  So at this point I'm chalking it up to being a weird batch of apex that wasn't consistent. But that said I will not be shooting it in this gun as I have lost my trust in it and will continue using the KGW loads.

I say all this to help anyone else out in the ether of search engines looking for help on this issue in the future.

Thanks for the update and glad you found a solution. KGW is a great group from my experience as well.

I have had a Stevens 301 for about 6 years.  When I shot it this year to check it's zero the Apex Ninja did not eject first shot.  It was from my most recent Apex purchase.  I had some old Federal and it ejected next shot.  Shot a few AA skeet loads.  They all ejected.  Just in case I put a piece of a small dowel rod in my vest to tap out if needed.  Curious problem.  The Apex patterns great so I'll stick with it.  It is a one shot gun anyway.
Edit - after reading some other post on other forums decided to switch back to my old 12ga 870 for the remainder of this season.  Don't need the complications.  BTW - the Apex .410 in my gun patterns great and has taken multiple birds over the last few years.  I also shoot Apex in my 12ga and is what I used in Wyoming that I use as my site picture.  No ejection problems there.

I have the same problem, only since they went to the new black low brass shell. Never had any trouble with the red high brass. Do the KGW loads pattern as good as the 9.5 apex?

Yeah they honestly patterned better. I'd say they throw a similar sized core with the stock extra full but the density with the 10s I preferred. They're gonna be a bit more expensive but I'll pay for the peace of mind knowing if I by some chance need to reload I can
