Some of the most rewarding times that I have spent in the spring turkey woods have been those showing a kid the thrill and mental challenges of hunting gobblers. They catch on real quickly to what gets you excited so much about chasing these birds. I have mentored a number of beginners through the years and love hearing stories from their times spent in the woods.

Do you have a youngster that you have taken under your wing to instill in them the timeless values of woodsmanship, fair chase and ethical sportsmanship?

Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read.

I will be taking an Active Duty soldier's son on the youth at our local military base.  I'm really looking forward to it.

Since we moved up here, I have been on the look out for someone's son or daughter who I can take out to the woods after a bird for them. Haven't found one yet, but I am still looking.

I usually have a coworker with a child that wants to go and I introduce them to our passion. Pretty high percentage continue on their own and enjoy it. I pulled into Dunkin Donuts a month ago, I had my 17 year old with me, and the young lady that was in the drive through was my old hunting buddy Joe's college age daughter. I said hello and she couldnt quite place me. Then I told her that I was there when she shot her first turkey. Her face lit up and she gushed for a few seconds. When we drove away my daughter said' wow dad, that was really cool" and hugged my arm. It was a very good day. Z

My son turns 13 next month and is ready for season. His season starts Saturday with youth hunts. He plans to fill his six tags this spring so I hope he has a decent guide lined up. Lol
