Anyone ever hunted the Homochitto National Forest? I have some private land about 25 minutes away that has struggled with keeping a good turkey population; figured I should give the national forest a try. Was curious as to how many hunters frequent it/if it holds any birds. Thanks!

Edit: Not looking for anyone's secret spot, just want to know how pressured the area is and if the forest tends to hold birds.

Maybe you'll get a PM from someone but the day's of getting this type of legitimate information from these forums is long gone.  Too bad really.  Good luck.

They are pressured, really pressured.  I have killed several there, but I had to work my butt off.

Homochitto gets a tremendous amount of pressure. Locals Louisiana and Arkansas folks. Pretty much just like every other public tract of land in Mississippi. We open too early for our own good. Especially with bama moving their opener back 10 days later than ours. Yes there's turkeys the chitto but be ready to fight the crowd

Scout, scout, scout before the season. You'll find birds. Have a plan A, B, C, and D. Because there will be someone after every bird you found.

It's very heavily hunted in March, but the pressure gets way more reasonable once April comes around. Killed quite a few there. Beautiful woods but tough, rugged terrain. Lots of lazy road hunters that try to strike one up with owl/crow calls and that will shut a gobbling bird down most of the time. I've heard horror stories about disrespectful hunters there, but everyone I've encountered has been friendly.

I hunted it for a very long time. Beautiful part of our world. There's turkeys, but just about as many people. I live about 45 minutes away from Homochitto. With that being said if I had another option, these days Homochitto would not be 1st choice.  Have a good one and May God bless y'all

i hunted there when i was a kid.  my grandmothers land backed up to the national forest.  back in the 80s and 90s there were turkey everywhere.  somewhere around the end of the 90s and early 2000s their was a sharp decline.  there were a lot of out of state hunters that started showing up in the area.  not sure if the season in other states changed or i think i heard it was featured in several primos videos? back then i was not paying attention to what changed other than my grandmother complaining about hunters on her land and me running into people in the woods around her house.

i haven't hunted there in a long time because there just aren't that many birds left.  selfishly, i wish Mississippi would push their start date back to april 1 for adults and do week before for kids.  Mississippi starts 2 weeks before most of the surrounding states and there is a massive influx of hunters.

Completely agree with this!
