Interesting read. Amazing would like to see what they really looked like. That last paragraph makes you think a little bit.

Interesting that this article says the California turkey was a separate SPECIES, Meleagris californica. However, current classification lists the other turkeys, eastern, Osceola, Rio, Merriam's, and Gould's, as SUBSPECIES of Meleagris gallopavo. The ocellated turkey is also a separate SPECIES, Meleagris ocellata.
