Phrase...talking turkey

I watched with interest the memorial post for Zach Farmer, in which he said, basically, that the hen turkey only says what she wants to say. That got me thinking about the origin of the phrase "Talking turkey". I thought I knew what that meant but I still looked it up. I was a bit surprised. Without looking it up, what do you think it means and what is the origin? I'll post what I discovered later.

I always thought it meant being frank and getting to the crux of the issue. Now, I am going to have to go look it up. You have peaked my curiosity.

I will go against the grain and disagree with Mr. Farmer and in my opinion,he is making it more romantic and mysterious than it is. Well, I will at least disagree with the presentation. Turkey hens talk all the time just out of habit. Ever be with 30 yards of a flock for an extended period of time? They don't shut up. Soft purrs, yelps, clucks, you name it. My thoughts are that instinctively, they are keeping tabs on each other, but this isn't premeditated at all. It's just
habit.Now
, with that being said, rarely do you hear a making a very audible ruckus without a very specific reason. If this is Mr. Farmers point, then I can be more on board with the statement. As a prey species, it doesn't make much sense for a hen to go making a scene unless there is a good reason. Gobblers fueled by testosterone just can't help it for the most part.

Talk turkey to me means come to an agreement, especially a negotiation. Like looking at a gun and then saying to the seller "Okay, let's talk turkey". No idea, although I have heard it and I have used it that way. Gonna look up the definition.

"Talking Turkey" is something I am apparently not doing quite often when attempting to call one of them in...

"Talking turkey" is a phrase down south IMO that is common with ..making a deal ..going back and forth , haggling ...in my mind it's akin to hard deal making like poker face etc...
A example would be pulling into a used car lot and the salesperson or potential customer..would say let's go inside and "talk turkey"

That statement makes sense for us humans... But animals are much more instinctive than that... They talk, cause they talk, they shut up, cause they shut up... As said above, they also talk alot among themselves... But still can be a good to remind sometimes to not overcall in certain situations.

The way I see it, turkeys talk turkey. A lot of times it's like I am speaking Mandarin, just well enough to get the hens to come see what exactly is going on, they come to straighten me out!!!
If I am talking to a lone long beard well then I try and tell him that I love him in every language, and sometimes it works!!!!
I have dealt with a pile of turkeys and I have never seen a bunch of turkeys that were quiet. Always making soft talk.

My English definition would be, Being frank, upfront, honest and to the point.
My Turkey definition would be, giving Ole 3 toes just enough Love to get Him to the end of my gun barrel.
