Looking for a youth shotgun for a ten year old. Something light and short.
Any ideas?

Mossberg SA 410 tactical ... You can use it as a single shot and as they continue to grow you can add another shell in the gun...  They are 10 now and before you know it, they will be 13 .... I don't care for the Steven Single shots .. IMO...

As Greg said, any of the SA series Mossbergs are good choices, and I also have the Mossberg Youth Super Bantam which has not disappointed me in any way the past three years I have carried it. Gun weighs 5.25 pounds naked out of the box and is a joy to carry.

All that said, Remington is back guys and I think they are building as good of an 870 as they have built. If a 20 gauge is not too much for your kid, I would spring for the Remington 870 Youth Fieldmaster in synthetic hardware. Gun is only 40.5 inches long. It is a hair heavier than the Mossberg Youth Super Bantam I mentioned above, but you have a solid steel receiver and heavier twin bars on the slide. I just got this one back from having it cerakoted, and have attached a Leupold Delta Point Pro on it - and cannot wait to kill a turkey with it.

I'd also recommend a pump mossberg if the recoil management wasn't mandatory. A semi mossberg if it was. My youngest was real tiny, smallest kid in her classes and shooting a 20 ga pump Winchester at 10. If you want Single shot, Henry. Be advised little kids tend to relate recoil w noise. Outer muffs and inner plugs same time are best bet. Also I'd pattern the turkey loads alone (without her) and only let her shoot light target loads. The day of the hunt give her real loads without telling her. I've done this for many kids and not one noticed
Excuse me sixbird you know all I said after the recommendations. I haven't been on here much and didn't notice it was an old time guy. I'll leave info up for anyone else if that's ok

The Stevens 301 is light but it's not short. The length of pull will make it hard for small kids to shoulder correctly.
That being said my son used a 301 .410 to flop two big longbeards the past two years......at 7 and 8 years old. It's a great shooting little gun with the factory choke and Turkey Ninja shells.

I have a Weatherby Sa-459 youth 20g waiting for him when he's ready for some more recoil.

Steven's 301, 9 year old daughter used it this year for first year. Put a vortex venom on top and I couldn't get her to stop shooting it with target loads, heck my 7 year old daughter and wife loved shooting it too.  Really light and was easy for her to handle.

This is a Tristar Cobra Youth I won at an NWTF banquet and put DIY camo on it.  It has been a good little gun.

Weatherby Sa-08 20 gauge youth with Trulock tss #7 choke.  I shoot federal 7 & 9 out of this setup.   Stevens 301 20 gauge packs a pretty good punch for a kid in my opinion.

I shoot a Stevens 301 20 gauge and, to me, it kicks no more than my Remington 870 20 gauge. You must consider that a 10 year old girl is going to feel the kick of any shotgun and if getting her into shooting, you need to get the lightest loads you can to get her started. I would find someone to reload some shells in as light loads as possible, and let her get use to shooting these before moving  up. The Stevens 301 in single shot only weighs 5.4 lbs. and she could probably handle that better than heavier autos, pumps, etc. Go find one in your local stores and let her handle one....she probably will like it. I started a grandson on the 301 and he loves it now.

Great responses already given above on the .410's. Those are all good guns and it's a matter of preference on which one is better. I'm going to go in a different direction though with my recommendation. Look at the Mossberg SA-28 Tactical Turkey. It's less than 42" long with a 12.75" length of pull, perfect for a youth. It's also light weighing in at 6 pounds. The pistol grip would make it a little easier to keep held up for extended periods, at least it does for me. You could add a slip on recoil pad for extra length of pull as your youngster grows up. The factory sights are very good and the stock choke shot as well as the Indian Creek I bought for it. Salt Creek Ammo makes a low recoil 28 gauge turkey load for it. 2-3/4" 1.25 oz of 9's, 10's, or both in a duplex load. Recoil wouldn't be much more than a lightweight single shot 410. I have one and really like it, you aren't giving up much if any advantage over a 20 gauge when shooting full power ammo.
