Yesterday morning played the game with a Super Jake, finally had eyes on him at 10 AM, 50yds strutting towards me, could hear spit, wings dragging leaves. But couldn't tell or hear if he was drumming? Hearing is going looking into aids, dont know if I hear drumming, thought I heard drumming Sunday morning behind my house, think Ive heard before, old age plays games with memory as well as hearing, so do Jakes drum?

Just had a jake two days ago drumming at an ear piercing volume. Some of the loudest drumming I've ever heard by far and every time he did it, the gobblers 150-200 yards behind me would hammer. Ended up killing one of those gobblers after a couple more maneuvers, but those jakes that were hanging out spit/drumming for awhile I think helped me keep them nearby.

I'll add that these birds had little tiny spurs and not a full fan, but they could gobble like a man. Without seeing them physically, their sound was all mature gobbler. They actually almost fooled me the day prior and about got a major headache.

Just worked a bird off the roost this morning that I thought was a mature bird based on his long drawn out gobbles. He came in full strut while spitting and drumming. He's been in front of me since 7 this morning and won't leave. Strutting, spitting and drumming the entire time and he's a jake. He has no spurs, 2-3" beard and an immature tail fan.

Yes... most will have a full adult fan....

Yes jakes can drum. The tail fan has nothing to do with it.

BTW...the drum is at a very low frequency, most hearing devices won't amplify at that freguency. If you turn the device way up you might hear the drum better, but not a whole lot.

Howieg

Especially early hatch " bull " jakes ... they can drum like the oldest gobbler around .

Rios I am hunting in California drum and gobble just like a tom...  I have no idea what I am hunting until I see him.  I have wasted countless hours chasing jakes.

Was watching a video with some Easterns, and finally heard what guys are talking about when they mention the jake gobble, as it sounds different...
Did I do that?

Fly fishermen are born honest, but they get over it.

My experience is limited solely to Northeastern turkeys, but yes jakes can, even with typical jake fans, drum loudly just like mature gobblers. They usually have a weaker sounding gobble however that is easily recognizable in my area, but not always.

Saw and heard some jakes drumming this morning in West Virginia at less than 10 yards.

I'm sure glad I wasn't the victim of a drumming jake last week. I was under the impression jakes couldn't drum, and shot a bird from just seeing his head "knowing" it was a longbeard because of the drumming. Learn something new every day.
