Easy Valuable Tip That Can Be Used By All On Here

For whatever reason, a lot of hunters struggle to draw a good looking and accurate ten inch circle and twenty inch circle on their patterns so that they can count pellets. It is easy to get a perfect nice looking ten and twenty inch circle.

All you need is either two narrow pieces of thin wood or even cardboard to do it. The first piece needs to be about 6 inches long. The second piece needs to be about 11 inches long.

Then you take the shorter piece and make a measurement five inches in length on it and put a hole on each end of that five inch measurement. There you have your template for your 10 inch circle (Make sure the holes go all the way through the wood or cardboard on both pieces).

Then you take your longer piece and make a measurement ten inches in length on it and put a hole on each end of that ten inch measurement. Now you have your template for your 20 inch circle.

Now, get two ink pens and use one of them in each hole when making your ten inch circle and also for making your twenty inch circle. Simply make a tiny mark in the center of the densest part of your pattern, and put one ink pen through one of the holes on your shorter piece and hold it on that tiny mark, and then put the other pen in the hole on the other end and trace out a perfect ten inch circle.

Now finally, take the longer piece and put one of those two pens through one of the holes and locate it on that SAME TINY MARK you used for the first circle and repeat the above process to make the larger twenty inch circle.

SAVE THE TWO PIECES and you can use them over and over when you pattern your gun.

I use an old wooden ruler. Place a thumb tack or small brad nail in the end at 1 then drill a 3/16 hole at 6and 11 inches now you can put a sharpie in the holes and you have a perfect 10 and 20 inch circle

Like you, I have my holes on one piece of thin wood but thought it might be easier to visualize on here by explaining it with putting the holes for each circle on different pieces of wood.

I see some of the wackiest circles on patterns and thought that maybe someone on here could benefit from what you and I offered. Thanks for your input and good luck in the woods.

Thumbtack stuck in center of target. Measure a piece of string 11 inches. Put half inch loop on both ends of string. Hook 1 loop onto thumbtack and other end on pencil , pen ect. Pull tight and make a 10" circle. Easy Peasy.

Good suggestions.  I got lucky and use a glass bowl my wife has for the 10", which really helps visualize the best part of the pattern. Just be sure to wipe the edge with alcohol or acetone to remove the sharpie before you put it back!

If my wife caught me wiping her bowls down with acetone, she would be using me as a target to pattern her shotgun.

A buddy of mine made the stupid mistake of counting pellets on their dining room table and those hundreds of sharpie dots that bled through the pellet holes on the paper and onto the table top did not go over well with his wife. They actually wound up having to get a new table. He had been complaining about how expansive TSS is, - well he took that to a whole another level when he had to buy her a new table. LOL

If you want the diameter to be 10", the string needs to be 5" from string to pencil...  10" string will give you a 20" diameter circle???

 On the job I always grabbed any ole scrap of carboard to do a circle. stick a nail in it then figure half the diameter and stick another hole. there you go . nail goes in one hole connected to the material you're marking. pencil goes in the other hole.   that said  now days I use cheap paper plates . the ones I get are 10" or close enough.
