I've only ever owned one 12 gauge.  I've had it since my dad bought it from Walmart in the 80s has been my go to for killing just about everything that walks/flies in the outdoors.

I'm interested in streamlining the current turkey barrel which is the 28" vent rib with a Carlson's turkey choke. I also have a 24" smoothbore slug barrel with rifle sights.

For those with more experience, would the recommendation be to seek out another barrel, stick with the 28" or have the 24" threaded for a choke?

I wouldn't do anything to that gun... What i would do is buy another turkey gun to your liking .... with either 21 / 24 inch barrel ..... IMO

Roger that. That's the third option especially since it looks like the upgrade may be similar cost of new buy. A couple Ive been looking at recently include a Mossberg 835 ultimag and the new ATI turkey over/under.

With today's shells and chokes if it's going to be your dedicated turkey gun, i would go with 20 ga.... It will shoot circles around 835 ultimag ... IMO

I agree with Greg, my dad and brother had barrels cut/choked and they never shot right again.

If you do decide to cut/thread I would do the 24". You already have a means of aiming with the rifle sights which is far superior to a bead and it will keep you from having to go with some other aiming device if you have issues with POI in relation with your POA.

Makes sense. Is there a recommended choke system or company that will thread the barrel?

My local gunsmith said he can do a poly choke. Also found compnchoke online, but I haven't confirmed if they are limited on their choke system.

Brother this day and time, with technology being what it is there's no way I would consider having a Poly-choke put on any gun. I would find a local Gunsmith that knows what he is doing and have him re-thread it. Make sure that he knows what he is doing and has proper equipment/tools. 
At the end of the day...... I WOULD SEND THE BARREL TO WILLIAM AT SUMTOY!!!! HE WILL GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME.

This is good advice.  I'd send the 24 to William.  Like another poster said, you already have sights on it too.

Send the 24" barrel to a reputable gunsmith, Sumtoy would certainly be one. I had my Model 12 cut and threaded from 32" down to 26". Had to take the barrel off to get it in the gun safe.
