I know you guys do alot of shooting was wondering something. I've heard a couple times now that semi patterns better then pump. Was told it was do to the cycling of the shell removing gas from shell helped not blow pattern up. Anyone ever notice this?

I think there are so many variables that it'd be hard to pin it down to action type.

The two best patterning 12 gauges we run here are a Super X2 gas auto and a Benelli Nova pump.  They shoot almost pellet for pellet with one another.

Best (tightest) I've ever seen was a Mossberg 500.

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.

Never gave it much thought ... But i can say the Old Federal Premium H W number 7 - 20 ga. it would make a bad gun shot good regardless... Best turkey shell for your money period in my opinion. Glad i still have a good supply of these shells ...

No.
Whoever started that myth might be flinching more under the pumps recoil.  Gas action won't make a gun pattern better if everything else is equal.

Old myth used to be pump guns were better as autos wasted gas

Have a Mossy 835 pump. A lot of people consider that one of the best patterning turkey guns made.
Also my brother has Remington 870 that throws great patterns.

Agree with the above statement maybe less recoil makes for better shot.

More than likely a myth. but now that you mention it I think that the best patterns I've seen of the shells I make are usually pumps not auto....

To make an argument.... what difference does it make if it is gas, break action, pump or inertia? How would any of these options make a difference in pattern?

To my thinking "Very Limited" the action only locks up the initial explosion that occurs when the primer is struck.  The actions uses this explosion to act or not act, manual or automatic, if you will.

When the hull opens up, that is when effect takes place in pattern, pressure, velocity, energy.

Bore, Barrel, choke, ammo is the factors in a pattern not the action. If the action were to have difference in pellet count I would think it to be negligible and not consistent.

Ask a pro builder, not me. Sumtoy??????????

Wonder if shot through chrono if a semi would lose any velocity

In my experience, single shots pattern the best.  But I have only really patterned 12 gauge and 10 gauge.
Sumtoy hopefully will chime in.

Have a good one

Paired up with a 21"  870 pump 20 gauge = magic.
21" 1100 results never seemed to do as well from pattern posters on here.

Less recoil (Semis) due to less pressure, less pressure equals less velocity, less velocity equals less energy.

A pump and single shot break action will kick more than a semi.

Do you think all that effects pattern any?
