Whenever I mentor a child deer hunting I bring an extra Buck Woodsman to dress it with and give it to them after as a momento of success. How cool would it be for first time hunters, I bet there's a few going out this spring to have you call in the bird, dress it with them with a new knife to give that knife to them especially if it's a first harvest? I bet one day 40 years from now they'd remember the event fondly remarking what I great mentor they had and cherishing that knife. A small pocket knife is all you'd need. We all have fond memories of knives. Let's not skip the tradition of passing one on

My parents had given me a Schrade Uncle Henry Bearpaw, danged near a folding machete, but it was the only knife I owned. I had a group of adults assisting me and showing me how to field dress. When I whipped out my knife, another of the adults looked at it and said, UH UH and handed me a Parker skinning knife and said to use it. When I finished, I cleaned the knife, folded it up and went to hand it back to him. He refused to take it, telling me that the knife was now mine and that he kept a stock of those knives for just these occasions. When my son killed his first deer, I presented him with that knife. And now that I have my first grandson on the way, I hope that knife gets passed along to him as well. One man's generosity has made a lot of memories for an entire family.
