I know that turkeys develop foot issues, I have killed a few. But I saw 4-6, some could have been the same bird on different hunts, this year in a very small area. What are your opinions on this? I see many social media posts on new hunters scoring and see a lot more people out hunting. My opinion is that most of them were wounded by hunters. I know there are many possibilities, but I am out and about all year and most started showing up after turkey season started. I believe inexperience and poor shot judgement are the biggest culprits. TSS is an awesome tool, but I think some people overestimate the ammo and overlook all the other factors that go into a good shot choice. Any thoughts?, not busting on anyone. Just looking for info. Thx , Al

I shot tss , it just plain out shots anything else in my guns .  But I have to agree , it gives folks a false impression that there gun is " super man " and makes then make poor shots ,,  I heard of more crippled gobblers this year then ever !

They bad to get bumblefoot same as a chicken. Think it's a staph infection. But anyways, you can usually see that. It's usually pretty evident. Even in the days before anything htl, I'd say a lot more got wounded than we'd like to admit. Hard to believe in very many clean misses with a shotgun. Add to the pellet count, and that likelihood of clean misses goes down even farther. There's definitely been a cultural shift over the past few years of people taking longer and longer shots too, and that sure don't help the cause.

Judging distances isn't easy. It's easier in the woods, as there are references. But in a field, most people hunt fields, it's even tougher. My favorite spot is a 400 yard strip of woods that has fields on both sides. Most vehicles I see are parked near fields.

Bad shots and long shots have been happening since the beginning of hunting. I  think the same fellow launching long shots with tss would be launching a similar long shot with lead. I haven't noticed an uptick in wounded turkeys but I tend to try and stay away from people and not hunt the well known areas. Like many things TSS can be used responsibly or abused. And like anything else there are many that will abuse it.

People pushed the limits of pattern way before TSS
the last gobbler I shot this spring had #5 unplated lead pellets in it, not what I was using

I am looking for a ranging green dot, lol

Not dismissing the crippling shots any, but they also get banged up by the spurs on other gobblers fighting. Infections etc. I've seen it on our farm turkeys and roosters.

I thought for sure this thread was about me. I am sure there are errant shots, disease, fight injuries, I would imaging they have to hurt themselves flying through trees on occasion as well. Maybe bad landings? People that just assume their gun is still sighted in from last year could be another problem.
