Countless times I've knelt down and shucked them out into the leaf litter in front of me, watching each one, only to spend a couple minutes trying to find all three. It does drive you nutty how shot shells bury themselves in the leaves and tall grass.

These darn shell losers are a big problem now, always broadcasting
where they've been huntin', trying to get their $15 dollar shells back.

A couple years ago I had a kid out on youth day in Maryland. He shot a nice gobbler in some steep terrain that got to flopping and rolling. A chase ensued and we caught up to the dead bird. Being new to turkey hunting he did not have a vest, just a fanny pack he turned forward for his gear. 

Of course the fanny pack was open in the chase and it's contents were strewn across the near vertical ridge we just 4ac3d down. Six freshly handloaded tss shells were missing. 12 gauge in olive drab hulls. I never even looked. His dad was with us and was really pissed off. I thanked him for the fun and headed home. To my knowledge they never found any of those shells.

Some 60 years ago during my college years at SIU-Carbondale, I was returning to my car via a levy after duck hunting in a swampy area. Before reaching my car, I managed to pick up nearly a box of 12 gauge duck loads some unfortunate hunter had lost, probably due to a hole in his hunting coat. Those shells went a long way in supporting a poor college student's ducking hunting efforts.
