Our Great Forum, what attracted me to join

I came here kinda by accident.  It's been good.  No I don't always agree with everything someone says and I don't always make statements that everyone likes. That's fine.  The important part is to remember that we're all on the same team and while someone else might hunt different than I do that's not a bad thing.

I came here because I heard of it when I was a member of the NWTF and on their forum. This site was just weeks old.

Back when I first started turkey hunting I was starving for info. The only source I had was Turkey and turkey hunting magazine an that was it. Didn't know anyone who chased Gobblers except my dad and brother and they weren't nearly as hooked as I was. Not much of a following back then in the north country. You'd hear stories once in a great while of somebody's uncle's best friend's daughter's boyfriend went turkey hunting.

My 1st hunt was a lottery draw. Dad, brother, and I finally drew a tag after 3 years of applying and we only had a 5 day period to do it. I didn't bag a Tom that 1st season but the experience was way more than I expected.

The next season had me in Arkansas and Missouri as it would be another 3 years before we were drawn again. Thus began my early life of as traveling turkey hunter. I had to do it. I had no other option. There was a fire set deep inside during that 1st season and it was consuming me. It needed to be fed.


As I came more proficient as Turkey hunter the quest for info waned. No matter there wasn't much to be had anyways. No forums, no Facebook groups, no nothing except the bimonthly TTH magazine. I stopped looking.

As I was growing as a hunter so grew my need to share my experiences with other like minded people . One day while searching for season dates or something I got sidetracked to this sight. I was extremely surprised to see so many gather in one place and share info freely. Man could I have used this sight back in the day. I kind of feel sorry for the Turkey hunting park ranger in Georgia were I would stay for weeks at a time trying to figure this crazy bird out. Or maybe it was I who was crazy! I would hunt him down during his breaks an badger him with never ending questions. We actually became pretty good friends and found out how much so after reconnecting with him last year after 20 seasons.

Anyhow after finding this site and lurking for a while, I decided to join. I felt I may have a little bit of info of my own to share. I've even met somebody here local to me and we are constantly talking turkey. Even spent a mourning with him, I watching and him hearing a Tom sit on the limb for 2 ½ hours gobbling his but off not 35 yrs from us. One time he shock gobbled so hard to a crow his foot slipped off the branch he almost tumbled out of the tree.  Caught himself just before he went over. Great time!

I get the Old school loose lips sink ships attitude and if I had mentors, friends, or family show me the ropes my attitude may be different. If you visit this site regular you''ll find I am not of the sort. I supposed my lack of any heritage and the underlying need for info that was not there has made me an open book. Some say to open. I say "I cant help myself." I feel the need to share. It is who I have become for better or for worse.  To deny it would be denying myself.

Good post Tom, it is the best site. It takes all kinds to make the world go 'round'. I've learned a great deal here and love the exchange of ideas, even when I or someone else puts their foot in their mouth. But that's how we learn. I also like to read the guys I've come to look on as my friends. We never met or blogged each other but friendships have been made and we don't even know each other. And the care expressed when we are down on our circumstance, picking each other up in prayer or encouragement. Thanks Shannon for all you do on this site.

I came over from another page. The mods weren't to nice and there was a pretty big exodus.  They had the... "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!" syndrome. Best move I made ;^)

I came here after catching the "bug" of turkey hunting when I was 16. Like many, just wanted to consume as much as I could about turkey hunting, different tactics and even just anything else about the wild turkey. For me it's nice to see others have the same passion and respect for the wild turkey that I've developed in my shorter hunting career (being a young guy). Not also into social media as much, but this seems to fill the void between seasons and it's great seeing others success on here (opposed to Facebook, Instagram, etc) and just reading the different topics that come up. Some posts really make you think and challenge your own personal stances and positions, which is something I don't mind at all.

I came here because I didn't have a mentor and realized I didn't know that much about turkey hunting. After being here I have learned so much from the outstanding members of this forum. Unfortunately this place has cost me a ton of money though?

I  came to this forum sort of by accident. I was looking for information, if I remember correctly, on call conditioning and found a reference to this forum, As said the rest is history and now check in here every day. I guess the one down side to reading all the information is it really shows me how much I do not know about turkey's and turkey hunting. Yes, this site has also cost me a bunch o dollars.
