Lester carbon cane price on eBay

This is the type of inflation that makes ZERO sense to me. This isn't an old call. It's not a historically significant call in the course of William Lester's call making. So why in the world does a call that he sells for under $200 bring over $700 on eBay with likelihood of that price still climbing? Are people that impatient with regard to waiting out a list? And, if so, how would that impatience carry over into the turkey woods? Obviously it don't matter to me and I hope whoever gets that call loves there's as much as I love mine. I killed a good bird last year with one just like that. But what is it that makes people spend crazy amounts on things they can purchase for a quarter that price?

I'm not well versed on trumpets but find myself fascinated by the prices some of them reach. I like to follow along as a spectator to try and understand more about their allure. There seems to be a section of die hard turkey hunters that have a lot more cash than me...

The Watkins makes more sense in that Marlin only sells his trumpets on eBay so either get it there or second hand or go without. There is no waitlist for his trumpets. What doesn't make sense about that is he's losing money on them that way, especially now with eBay moving to 1099s. The second he broke $600 he pays 15% off the top and then he'll pay close to a third at the end of the year in taxes. So off a $610 call he'll likely clear $350. He'd be better off selling them one off on a forum like this than he would only selling them on eBay.

I've pretty much don't even bid on anything anymore on ebay.. most of those who bid those prices get caught up in all that bidding and in my opinion have no clue.

Great calls! And, yes, you're absolutely right about his wait time. It's dumbfounding. Think they just don't know how to contact him? Think they just saw the whole Mossy Oak "The Specialists" video on YouTube and got awestruck? I don't get it. I really don't.

Pot calls are the same way. People are paying more on eBay than they can get them from the maker? Makes no sense to me. Only thing I can think of is because turkey season is about to open up and they're excited. Maybe it will die down some after season.

     I think a lot of this is people not really knowing the turkey call market. Some are probably impatient and for them the money's not an issue.
     Some I bet are intimidated by having to deal with a particular maker. I know I felt intimidated the first time I talked with Lamar Williams, but I'm glad I did because we had a pretty interesting conversation that I'll always remember. That's why I feel the calls I buy directly from a maker are just much more appealing and valuable to me.

It doesn't take too much thought to see your math & logic is a bit flawed.

First you assume Mr. Watkins is dishonest and cheats on his taxes. An honest person is going to report income from a business. So the 1099's have no real influence on an honest person in business. They report the income 1099 or not.

Second Mr. Watkins makes a bunch of turkey calls and has actually made a name for himself in doing so. He is definitely in the business of selling turkey calls whether he has a "real job" or not. He is going to have expenses. Like supplies, tools, maintenance, his shop building maybe, advertising, the eBay commission, etc etc. There will be deductions to that $600+ he gets for the call. It ain't all profit.

Third I am sure Mr. Watkins has thought through the Ebay method of selling his calls and determined that it is favorable to his business. Otherwise he would probably not use that venue. The Ebay commission is worth it to him.
