2021............. A look back

For the most part, 2021 was a dumpster fire.   But this ain't about COVID, presidents or the economy.

2021 was actually one of the most memorable years in my 40-some years of chasing the wild turkey.  Posting up my 2021 in a picture summary.

Let's all look back at our 2021 whilst waiting for opening morning 2022.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all !!!

I was fortunate enough to tag out both states I hunt, but these two were my favorite and most memorable birds of the year. Really enjoyed taking some other folks hunting, though, and that might be my favorite part of 2021 as far as turkeys, seeing those first timers eyes light up at the gobble. Also got on a good deer, and managed to put six in the freezer for me and a few friends. Headed out to squirrel hunt here in a minute. All in all a pretty damn fun year.

I had a good year. Made some memories and the hunting was decent. The freezer is in good shape. Went out this morning for the last day of doe season and although I had opportunity I didn't fire a shot. It was just good to spend one last day in the woods for 2021. Setting on the truck bed enjoying a Pepsi and a cigar before I had home for a nice crab leg dinner and quiet evening with the wife. See you guys in 2022.

2021 treated my boys and I good. Turkey season was a blast and deer season was full of surprises. I turkey hunted South Carolina, Virginia and my home state Maryland.
My Virginia bird.

My Maryland birds

My sons with 2 very nice Maryland birds

Our deer season was special as well. My oldest son shot his first Sika deer with a bow.

I harvested a solid whitetail during our early muzzleloader season.

And a Sika Hind during our rifle season.

My youngest was proud of his youth day buck he waited patiently for in order to get a good shot. 60 yards with a 6.5 and he dumped him.

I cherish the time I spend hunting with my sons. The older they get, the more involved they are with life and the time is harder to find.

I'd show you those memories of hunting camp with friends but that's where those stories will stay for now!

Very enjoyable year even through the adversity we all endured. Had success with the turkeys, my nicest bird from NY pictured below. The highlight of my year was getting my first Elk. I took him with my Muzzleloader in Colorado with my brother. Sharing it with him made it much more special....Happy New Year to all...

First bird of the year came in my home state of Kentucky

Second was also a Kentucky bird and the first double my wife and I have ever killed together

Next was an Indiana public bird where I also doubled with a good buddy of mine

This was probably my favorite hunt of the year. My public land Ohio bird on an amazing hunt after sleeping in the car the night before.

And my final bird of the year on my wife's family's property in West Virginia. It was a great season and I also got to call a few birds in for friends and family.

I also managed to kill my first velvet buck this year while hunting with my wife which was pretty cool. Not as cool as killing turkeys though

I took him at about 40 yards. Colorado rules are open sights, no scope. Makes it more challenging, but I got lucky...Happy New Year my friend...Congrats to all, we look forward to a great 2022.....

All in all I had a very blessed 2021. There were ups and downs but over all a good year.  I was fortunate enough to be able to spend a lot of time with my 2 grandkids (a 2 yrs old and an 8 month old). I did take a decent Gobbler last spring. Last fall I killed a doe early in the bow season and took a really nice buck on Veteran's Day. It is the 8th-9th buck I've killed on Veteran's Day in the last 15 years. All 3 were killed in just about the same spot...all lees than 25 yards of each other. The doe & buck were in the same spot... on the same trail and 3-4 feet & a month a part. The turkey was within 5 feet of the tree that my stand is in the I shot the deer from. I still have a doe tag and a fall archery only turkey tag. Time is running out to fill them....I have until January 10th for both of them.

First of all congratulations to you all. 2021 was a good season for me except that I didn't get my daughter Sophia her 3rd bird (she had tons of Jake's but didn't want to shoot one and her work schedule got in the way). She said that it didn't bother her that much, and that I should go and kill a bunch. I took her advice and killed two nice gobblers in North Carolina and then one in Ohio. Oh no I was blessed with a great season.

My 2021 turkey season was humbling and got skunked. Put a bunch of miles on the boots, but I got to enjoy my first out of state hunt in NW Nebraska and enjoy time in the woods here in Michigan where I missed on the best opportunity I had all season (gonna use a more open choke this year lol).

I haven't hunted Michigan's rifle season in a long time (maybe 8 years since I hunted private), but I was able to take my first public land buck on our rifle opener in close to 20 years (mainly bow hunt) and share it with my kids.

Also made a career change from the chemical field to the power production field.

I had a good spring. I went on a solo hunt sleeping in my truck.
I got this bird in Kansas
Then up to Nebraska. Got to one o
n public and one on private the next day.
Then home to PA. Got this guy Friday of our first week after missing him on Tuesday
Then off to Maine at the end of May. I got 2 in two days and my buddy got one

It was a great spring season. I'm looking forward to this springs trips.
