Well, we had a ton of rain on our muzzleloader opener, and it continued through the night.
I decided that I wouldn't hunt Sunday morning, but go out in the afternoon.
I texted a buddy to hunt, and we hit his property around 1.
He sat in his blind, and I headed to a west facing treestand.
Well, it was warm, and nothing was happening all afternoon, but it was a beautiful day to be in the woods.
Well, around 5:30, I hear walking behind my stand. I turn, and I saw what I thought was a decent buck coming in behind me. He was coming to my right which meant I had to contort myself around in my stand.
Well, I had him in the scope, and he was looking right at me!
I touched off the muzzleloader, and heard him crash, then walk off.
I heard a deer blow, and was thinking "did I miss him?"
I got down, and me and my buddy went looking, but didn't see any blood or hair at the impact site. We looked as best we could, but I decided to get a tracking dog and not risk loosing him.
Long story short, the dog and handler found him piled up 125 yards away!
Coyotes already started gutting him, so some meat was lost, but only around the shoulder and ribs.
I learned some valuable lessons. Always take a picture after the shot to help identify when on the ground.
Second, have a really, really good flashlight.
I wasn't prepared to shoot a deer, and I consider myself fortunate to have recovered him! From the time of the shot, till we recovered him, was 3 hours, and they still found him.
206 lb, 9 point!

Nice one Mike.   Congrats!  And good call on the dog.
Thanks Ronnie! If I had left him overnight, there would've been nothing but a head and spine!
Really humbled to have gotten him, because I'm not really the best deer hunter, lol!
