I've owned and shot 45-70 and 300 mag and they don't hold a candle to 3.5 inch Winchester high velocity shells out of my 870. Those suckers will drop a turkey on the front end and give you a nose job on the back end.

Johnny Cash used a 300 WM his entire life.  Then one day he shot a 3 1/2” turkey load out of a Mossberg 835.   That afternoon he wrote a song.  The first four words pretty much sums it up.

I thought that song came from "Hotter than a pepper sprout" ( We got married in a favor)

Where do 420 grain 45-70 Elmer Keith loads in a 7lb rifle with a hard buttplate off the bench fit into the program

Not even remotely close.

A 3 inch Magnum turkey load generates more recoil than a 300 WM.

https://www.fieldandstream.com/articles/hunting/2012/04/problems-caused-supersized-turkey-loads-and-light-and-lethal-loads-you-shou/

A .458–an elephant gun–generates up to 65 foot-pounds of recoil that you feel as a shove. Meanwhile, a 12-gauge loaded with a high-velocity 31?2-inch magnum lead turkey load cracks you with up to 75 foot-pounds of recoil.
