Sighted in my Remington 7mm Mag last weekend. Believe it or not, it kicked less than my Super Black Eagle with 3-1/2 inch Federal Heavyweight 6’s. I was pleasantly surprised……

I’ve shot my dad’s 300 wsm, and my own 300 win mag quite a bit. And a few different shotguns with 3 1/2” a lot. I can tell you by far it comes down to the gun. Mine and my dad’s Winchester model 70’s don’t kick as hard as my Mossberg 835 with a 3 1/2”. But they kick harder than any semi auto, gas or inertia driven I’ve ever shot. I had a BPS 10 gauge 3 1/2” and it didn’t kick as bad as my Belgium browning Auto 5 mag 12 with a 3”.

I would say gun weight and fit probably has a lot to do with it for sure. I know they both will get your attention!

Turkey load blows away all my rifles. I won't even look at my Son when he shoots his because I hate to think what it's doing to my old butt when I'm behind the trigger!  Shooting feathers it just rolls off me, but when on paper she's wicked!

Not only the weight of the guns but you’d have to consider the bullet weight of the 300 WM and the shot charge of the 12 ga. 3 1/2”. Generally I stay away from both when I’m turkey hunting.

Try that 12 gauge 3.5" turkey load in this thing....

I did 4 times and was black and blue from my sternum to my shoulder and down my bicep. Shoot the 3" loads, and those are bad enough.

Reading all these responses is quite entertaining.........and telling at the same time.

"Recoil" is a quantitative thing.  Physics has a couple of formulae that put values on the two totally measurable aspects of the back end of a gun when it's fired...............free recoil energy (measured in ft/lbs) and recoil velocity (measured in ft/sec).  Plug in a few variables like gun weight, projectile weight, etc. and you get a number.

 What physics DOESN'T easily account for is recoil pads, individual gun fit, porting and other semi-subjective things.  So "running the numbers" will always bring the 3 1/2" 12 gauge out on top of this discussion.  But personal opinions will vary.  One of the lousiest recoiling guns I ever shot was a 700 BDL in 7mm-08.  Didn't fit worth a hoot and I hated it.  I was glad I didn't own it.  Another fellow here, mentioned how lousy the 835 kicks but the BPS 10 wasn't bad.  I've patterned a few different 835's and never found them to be that hateful at all.  I've owned a BPS 10 for over 30 years and it SUCKS at the back end.  Now my kid (24 years old and pretty much the same size as me).........he loves shooting my BPS 10.  Go figure.  But I have 2 rifles in .300 Win Mag and one in .300 Wby Mag and have nothing bad to say about the recoil level of any of them.

Yeah, this isn't even a close call. Shooting a TC Encore in 300 win mag right next to an H&R shotgun, and that's "only" a 3" 1 7/8oz at 1150 fps, it's not even close. The 300WM isn't pleasant, but it's just a rifle. The 300WM in a bolt gun is not a big deal at all. A strong 12 gauge round on the other hand, good luck. Anyone who claims to shoot more than one shot in a singleshot without flinching is either a huge liar, or killed so many brain cells in the process he doesn't remember. Gas semi auto's like a Remington 11-87 tame recoil a ton, but they are still way into the uncomfortable territory. Put a more reasonable 2 3/4" 1 3/8oz or 1 1/2oz load in the gun, and then maybe you are coming close to 300WM territory.
