Flame box elder calls

Have many of you made calls out of flamed box elder?  I've heard that the red stain fades pretty quickly when exposed to UV.  Most turkey calls aren't exposed to direct sunlight for long periods so the red stain should last longer in my opinion.  Anyone here have experience with this?

I have made quite a few crow calls with it. I do stabilize the blanks to keep the colors from fading over time

The colors will fade with oxidation. Oxidation is just a natural process. A very heavy CA coat would help seal the call and hold some of the flame in over time. There's not much that can be done to totally prevent it. Little sunlight exposure, stabilization of the blank, and a heavy finish are all preventative measure to something you can't entirely stop.

You can slow it down but never stop it.

I have never tried it but have read that a number of pen turners and such actually use red dye to enhance the color and combat fading. Methods were not hard to find searching the www.

I read that too.  Might look more into that.
