Wood for Push Pin Striker?

What wood works well for the stricken block of a push pin?  I'm messing with making one and I know they can be challenging but I'm always up for that.  I've tried a lot of combinations so far with not great results.  I have a good push pin to look at and give me the general idea.  I'm coming to the realization that the wood is very important for the pad and striker and the grain direction may be as well.  Not going to give up but I'm a trumpet guy so I need some wood type guidance and any other info folks are willing to share to lead me in the right direction.
