box call woods

Well before this previous turkey season I went pot call crazy  I am still going to buy a few but now I am going to concentrate on a few new boxes... I dont think the wood in a pot makes as much difference as the design inside....but on a box I think that is a different story.... what woods for box and striker are your guys favorites? Does any woods sound more natural? And lastly what woods makes a box call scream {a box to really reach out}  all boxes that I purchse will be short boxes... I have a few boxes now Albert Paul {walnut/mahogany} Larry gresser one way hen all cherry, two of gobblez's half moon boxes cherry/poplar and a cedar lid cant remember the box, deluxe lynch foolproof, and a primos boxcutter...   Thanks

I seem to be having a lot of success with sapele over cherry (usually very raspy and loud, but with a careful lid design it can be sweet and crisp) and also with walnut over poplar and Ipe over douglas fir (both of those have a classic young and old boss hens).

sapele over cherry, and Ipe over douglas fir... those are interesting combos... walnut poplar has always been a favorite of many and I know walnut butternut is to........hahaha looks like I may be in trouble with the wife this year...

I have a box with quarter sawn sycamore lid and cherry sides that sounds very nice...plus I love the look of the quarter sawn sycamore

 i might ruff a few feathers here...wood is important in a box call but  so is the design of the call.if you want a screamer your more likely get it in a neil cost style long box or fence post style call.sound chamber size,lenth of box /lenth of paddle ect.   makes a big difference.imho   one of my fav wood for making them is butternut box  cedar  lid.

Well, I usually go with what works and kills turkeys, but in the end the customer must like what they hear as well.  I wouldn't normally try Ipe over doug fir, but it looked so good on paper I had to give her a go and I was pleasantly surprised.  I have a 2nd Ipe over doug fir almost done and will post in about a week.

Here are a few pics of gobs taken this year with a Sapele lid over cherry I built.  In total, 5 gobblers were taken with this call this season, 2 Merriams in Kansas, 2 Rios in New Mexico and 1 Eastern in Maryland.  Nice to see the gobblers are not biased as three species came a running to their demise!  The hunter and guide said in emails that they called in over 25 gobblers, but since they were filming they could only get 5 perfect kills on film.  The last pic is the call I posted some weeks ago.

I made a long box with Wormy chestnut and a black walnut lid man that thing screams with crisp yelps and clucks.
