Yesterday afternoon I went back to the same private property where I shot the Odd Little Bird last Thursday. I figured that the big bird had not been a witness to the slaying of the young guy and that the same setup might produce the bird that I was looking for. I sat in the same spot, had the same decoys at the same location and settled in. I did some quiet mumbling turkey talk and watched the wind work the decoys into some very convincing movement. About 6:30 I hear a half gobble from the far northeast corner of the field. about 3 minutes later I hear the same gobble but a little closer. At 6:40 I see 2 longbeards running across the field to the decoy setup. The one in the back stopped short and went into strut, essentially marking himself with a bullseye. They went to circling the strutter decoy, purring the whole time and sizing up this stupid intruder. The marked bird went into strut next to the decoy and the other one tried to as well. The big bird charged at him telling him that HE was the Boss around here and wouldn't take any of that strutting nonsense out of him. They stomped around for a while and eventually both heads went behind the spread tail feathers, giving me the chance to raise the gun. With that, the shot was academic and Mr. Big Boss Gobbler was reduced to simple possession.
