I'm so sneaky!

Yeah right!  Whenever I have bird roosted and try to in close I always seem to pick the noisiest route to the bird.   I proceed to kick every rock, snap every stick, and get caught in every vine(usually poison oak) on my way in.

Is it just me or do some you other guys have the same problem. I supposed a light might help but I feel I'm alerting birds. I do use the alluminated screen of my phone in tight spots.

The last time in to a roosted tom I had one small drainage to cross and I would be golden. Slipped on my butt and slide down a small hill. Luckily the drainage had rushing water in it muffling the racket. Had it not been for the rushing water I'm sure every turkey in county would have heard me coming.

I have a hard time since my car accident myself. Seems like the slower I go the more noise I make, that is one of the reasons I am into the blind at least an hour before sunup.

I got no excuses. I'm sure I'm not being all that noisy. But man those little twig snaps seem to echo through the quiet dark woods. By the time I get to my spot I'm all tense and stressed out.
Traversing steep hillside is a bear too. I'm always losing my balance. I must look like a ballerina with Parkinson's standing there on one leg trying to regain my balance.

One thing I have started to do, if I am putting a blind into the woods I take a rake with me and clean up where I am going to put the blind as well as the approach to the blind to try to minimize noise.

Roosting turkeys have wildlife come through underneath them making noise all the time. I think a key is to move slow and stop for a little bit at a time maybe try and sound more natural. There's been times I've thought that there was no way there would be a turkey within hundreds of yards of me after all the racket I just made. Got light out and had birds close to me in the trees.

What your going to have to do is learn to call them to you, so you don't have to sneak up on them.  LOL.. I feel your pain, i think it happens to all of use...

I thought roosting birds was an old wives tale? Ive never been able to roost a bird... They just dont gobble in the evenings around here. Ive tried listening to wings as they fly up to the limb, but to no avail. One time the Lord was with me and I set up on the tree that a bird was roosted in. So, I dont have your particular problem. I do have the problem of accidently moving things when gobblers are in close though. My pot call will roll off my lap, my gun strap will slide off the side of my leg, my heel thats dug into the ground will slip out, etc...

getting into stalking while bowhunting will really improve your ability to sneak through the woods.

that said, i don't try to get in on birds too much in the early season. our woods are to bare and the hills are too steep. birds can see you from everywhere.

It's a rare occasion were ever I go except maybe missouri 2 year ago. 1 o'clock stop time and them birds ripped it up all afternoon when it wasn't raining.
