I got a hankering to build a Long Box today, first one for me, had no idea what I was doing so have mercy on me. Then to add insult to injury, I decided to make a sound file to see what I created....here it is, still tuning the thing, sounds like maybe a tad too low right now, whatcha think?

Black Limba/Mac Ebony Lid.....Just learning how to play this thing, both sides, every way possible.

Keep at it. They sure are tough to get tuned perfect. I've been tinkering with a few myself. It sure can be addicting.

As most guys tune their paddle callers, yours is a whisker on the low side.  Yep.

That being said.............. First effort ??  Outstanding !!!    :icon_thumright:

I'd take that call to the woods and kill gobblers with it.  That's not even a question.

The good Lord ain't made a gobbler I can't kill.  I just gotta be there at the right time.....  on the day he wants to die.

It is a touch low, however it would definitely hunt.

Great job for your first paddle caller.

Appreciate the feedback guys.....I could not stand it "as is", hopefully I don't ruin it. I was back out in the shop this morning messing/re-tuning it, will post another sound file after I carve it up some more....lol

I guess you'll either end up with a more finely tuned caller or firewood and experience.   :toothy12:

Either way..................   :icon_thumright:

Agree with the others, it is low. Everyone is using heavy woods for paddles these days. But with that box, perhaps a lighter paddle may wake it up.
A quality paddle caller will most run itself.  It just needs someone to carry it around the woods. Yoder409
Over time...they come to learn how little air a good yelper actually requires. ChesterCopperpot

In the beginning I hear some good Jake yelping, to me your tone and cadence sounds Jake, several of the early yelps had a good yawk in them

later when your speeding up your cadence it's a little low tone for the average hen, but I still hear an old hen in there at different places, a couple times a little bit of a "hen box" sound for old hen.

most of the Kee's sounded a little low to me even for a Jake, but I've had otherwise good L boxes that had no kee in them.

I heard some good realistic clucks but also some clucks that sounded like wood on wood, this could be where you were on the rail for finding the sweet spot or maybe just your technique when first learning

If I was you I would of posted a big pile of wood chips on the floor, told us have plenty of boxes that sound hen and have been hard at it working on a Jake/gobbler box.

If you haven't watched it yet the video of Ralph Snodgrass "Snozz" showing how to run a paddle call is well worth watching. It's on the forum somewhere

I would hunt that call in the spring to challenge a gobbler or fall to call in a Jake/gobbler

When Neil Cost first started making his boatpaddle long boxes, he often complained in his conversations with me about the troubles he had tuning them. He often said he would have a long box tuned one day, then the next day it would sound awful. Then he would work on tuning it some more, then set it aside. With some callers, this could go on for weeks...or months.  Finally, Neil told me the secret for tuning a long box was knowing when to stop messing with it.  Later, when I asked Neil a question about it, he told me that getting a long box finally tuned to his satisfaction was one of the most difficult frustrations for him building a long box.

I do agree with the others it's little on the low side , but that low side is pretty dang good. It will kill just like it is .. can't wait to hear the finished call..

As others have said a tad low but man that thing clearly has a ton of potential, keep up the good work.
