Has anyone worked with dark persimmon heartwood?  It looks really dark like ebony, which makes sense since persimmon is an ebony.  I have never seen a turkey call or striker made from dark persimmon heartwood.

noisy box call that seems to sound like a flock of juvenile hens pecking their way through a wheat field

Yes.   It usually results from damage to the tree.   I've got some.  Only ever cut one that had a significant amount of dark heart wood.

I've got a large old persimmon tree that has a hole in the bottom of the trunk that chickens and guinea fowl would make nests in.  The tree looked almost dead last summer.  I'm thinking of harvesting said tree and using the wood for turkey calls.  The tree is very large and has been a big tree all my life, and I'm 53.

Thanks.  I was afraid of that.

Not the same kind of black inclusions you are referring too.  The heart of the tree will stain blackish.

Here is one that has a little black that I made many many years ago.

No trees were hurt in the sending of this message, however a large number of electrons were highly inconvenienced.

Isn't persimmon almost as hard as your saw blade?
