The .410

Have most of you that hunt turkeys with a .410 always been able to hunt with them or has it been recently legalized with the HTL options coming to market??

Here in Iowa, we are limited to 20ga and up.  I was in a gun shop over the weekend and the shop had 2 bottomland camo'd .410 autos.  They were pretty nice pieces of hardware.  I was a little confused on why a shop would be carrying something that is "designed for turkeys" but can't be legally used in the state for turkeys, but not my business.

I guess I was just curious if the use of the .410 is something that is gaining legality in states or if it has always been an option.  I've killed turkeys with a 12, 20, bow, and muzzleloader....a .410 would be cool.

You can small game hunt with the 410 and such.. With the screw in chokes, back in my rabbit hunting days, i wish i had one of these new guns. I did use Steven 410 double barrel for rabbit hunting, still have the gun.. The new TSS shells, has help make it become legal in a lot of states in last few years for turkey hunting.

Started kids out with .410 and lead years ago. Missouri. Wish Tss was available then.

RABBIT huntin , dang i miss rabbit hunting. Beagle dogs .410 and running rabbits. Are not many around anymore here.

I'm probably going to use my .410  and 28 gauge exclusively this Spring and I hunt a lot of different states. With TSS, both gauges are very lethal- the .410 at 40 and change, the 28 at 50, although I will not intentionally shoot either at greater than 40. I prefer 30-35 yds. It's fun carrying a light weight gun and the 5-6 light weight shells in my vest. There is honestly no reason to carry a 12 anymore.

X2 .. I've got some turkey killing machines in 12 ga. but they are mostly memory guns now. No reason to carry them with me having the 410 and 20 ga..

I'm sorry to say I paid a lot of money for my Benelli 12 ga and I intend to keep on using it.

I went to a 20ga several years ago and started loading my own TSS just so I could carry a light weight gun, The way things have developed I should have gotten a .410 or a .28 ga!

I have a .410 o/u I use for upland, but no chokes and no selective trigger keep it out of the turkey woods!

I would have never thought about using a 410 till I read up on TSS. Last year I bought a Steven's 301 put red dot on it. Deep cleaned barrel and choke.  It patterned to 40yds.  Took a great bird with it drop dead as if he was hit with a sledge hammer.

I've been considering going the .410 route as well. I really like the idea of a lightweight gun considering the amount of miles walked in turkey season.

This is an over regulation issue or not keeping up with technology issue, in some states.  Several states won't allow any size shot smaller than 7.5 for any gauge shotgun.  If a state allows TSS, than shot size to #9 should be allowed in ALL gauges.  A .410 with TSS will definitely get the job done out to a respectable distance.  A .410 with TSS would get more Young kids interested in this Great sport.

I agree.  In Iowa, we are regulated to 10,12,16,20ga and shot sizes 4-8 in lead or nontoxic shot.  Basically it is illegal to get the benefit of the new NonTox shot options like TSS
