Knots in wood

Do knots in the wood affect the sound of a pot? Or as long as they stay intact, are they just cosmetic?

Here's a pic of a cherry pot I turned. It didn't affect the sound at all and I think it added character to the call. Just my two cents though.

That's a good question. I have one builder, who will not send you a call with any imperfections in the wood. He just feels it could cause problems down the road. I'm curious to know what others think...

I always defer to the builder. If they feel on playing the call that the sound is affected or the knot may come loose they won't send it. I have some pots with knots and wormholes. The sound is good and the imperfections add uniqueness .

small knots like u guys have posted above i couldnt realy see affecting sound ,, now maybe if a knot was big enough to cover bottom of call where pedestal is inside may have some effect ,,Knots going be harder wood ,, but iam sure the builder would adjust something make up for the hardness of that area ,,, straight grain cherry verses croutch area cherry  croutch going be little harder wood ,,, just like any wood if turned right dried right  good finish a  knot should not cause any problems down round

I've passed on a couple of Strikers before that showed knots in them. I also never had the chance to run them either so that's just me.

  I've turned a few cedar pots and strikers with knots in them. the cedar pot is my hunting call and have never had any problem. Even a few nail holes.

Personally I like knots and some small imperfections in the wood.  Just a little something God put in it for you to find when you make a call.

I agree. Wood is like natures canvas and love getting the best out of it. Sometimes because of the knots or nail holes I have to change up things but in the end it's worth it.

Here is a buckeye burl call i have from a local call maker, has knots, holes all the way around it,
I have had it about 10 years now and no problems. One of the best slates i own!

I really like knots in pots and strikers. I have 2 Fred Cox persimmon strikers....one with 2-3 knots and and the other without a blemish. The one with the knots has a very unique sound to it that gives me a load of confidence when I run it.
