870 express sumtoy .665 tss 9s
« on: February 09, 2021, 01:10:53 AM »
This is my first year reloading my own TSS. The prior few seasons Ive been shooting Apex gt-3 9s. I never could seem to find quite the right combination with apex to push my pattern well into the 400s at 40. I know most folks don't care...but I do and ill leave it at that. I purchased some recipes from a member here . Im sure yal have seen his IRON MAN pattern pics through his 870s. And this is what i came up with. Stats are hard to read on the pic so Ill post them.
Remington 870 express
21" barrel
Sumtoy .665
3"  2.25 oz of TSS 9s
64 deg F slightly windy and overcast
441 pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards, rangefinder verified off a bench into a shot trap

Best pattern ive pushed through my 870 to date. I was able to get some low 400s with apex 410-420. But that was after lots of shots and perfect conditions and experimenting and perfect conditions. Im definetly happy with the results thus far, and cant wait to shoot these loads  some fairer weather.

That’s a hell of a pattern! What were the 20” numbers?

I am so happy that I am not a gobbler in any patches of woods that you hunt.... :turkey2:

Impressive. Did you shoot any at 30? Curious how hot the core was at 30.

I did not shoot at 30. I rarely do. 20 and 40 is typically all I shoot. I know many people who stretch to 60. Personally I don't, I want to recapture as much shot as possible in my trap...so I feel no need to shoot any further.

Gotcha. Got any pics of the 20 yard pattern. Again, the 40 yard is very impressive.

no pic of the 20, its a slug hole with a 6"-8"of pellets in a circle around the slug hole. Very basic super tight 20 yard pattern with extra holes around the blown out part.

I’ve got to do some more 20 yards shots , when the weather gets better . I just got it close with some cheap stuff then went to 40 and used my tss. When I fire another at 20. I’ll snap a pic for you so you’ll have a better idea. Does it leave a slug hole ? Yes. However ..... it still has a better spread at 20 than back in the day when i shot #6 led. You definetly have a little more wiggle room. Only a little though.
