Oak and Ash or Ash and Poplar?

So I am planning to go to the Call Makers Summit in August and I know I am going to be looking for a Walnut and Mahogany box call/longbox but was also thinking on oak and ash or ash and Poplar and was wondering if they would work well together in a boxcall/longobox?

Interested in the combinations because they remind me of my father because of the furniture he collected (Walnut and Mahogany) and the time we spent in the woods cutting firewood all spring and summer.

Walnut over mahogany is a classic wood combination. I would recommend it in a short box for sure (no experience in a long box with this combo).

I have seen very few oak box calls, and have played only one. It was a zircote over oak fiddlebox. Same goes for ash, but never have played one.
Poplar is used all the time in box calls.

For the specific wood combos you mentioned, you will have to get with a reputable call maker, and have it made to order. I'm not a call maker but I would THINK using oak or ash for the lid and yellow poplar for the box, would be workable. Oak and ash together might be tough to tune, because they are so close in hardness. Might be like trying to tune an all walnut box.

I was wondering about oak and ash as they are both hard woods, know that from having the fireplaces and selling it, not sure what kind of poplar we had there though, we no longer own the property but I wonder if the current owner would let me get some wood from there? Might be worth a try after we get the vehicle on the road though I will have to research who owns it first and contact them, I live about 150 miles from there now. Thanks for the reply.
