I need to replace the beard on mine.  The glue popped off one day, and the beard disappeared.

The beard on this decoy is actually a full beard that you can pull through the hole in the front to make it as short or as long as you'd like.

I have been toying with the idea of cutting the tail-end off and attaching the fan from my bird that I shot last year and never mounted. I will wait to see how the jake does this season.

That's right.  Mine got all unraveled, so I tried to glue it.  That didn't work.  ;)

Yeah, I had to trim it a few times. It is best to get it set how you want it and leave it alone.

My beard fell off too...I made a jake beard out of bristles from a cheap paintbrush.

I never thought about using the cavity to carry a hen decoy in...good idea!

it's not the harvest,it's the chase

Here is my attempt at sprucing up my jake decoy.

Your decoy looks great! The copper paint idea sounds like a great idea!
The addiction will cost you time and money and alienate those close to you. I can give you the names of a dozen addicts — myself included — whose wives begin to get their hackles up a week before turkey season starts and stay mad until a week after it closes.

Just to see if it would work, I made a gobbler decoy out of a five-gallon plastic bucket, attaching a real fan and wings to it via binder clips. The head was fashioned out of a 2X4 and painted appropriately. The jake beard was a short piece of black frayed plastic rope. All of the parts were carried in the bucket, making it very portable. I only used it twice, but took a gobbler each time, once even using my flintlock fowler!

Could you try a satin clear coat for more shine/sheen? I don't know if they make one that's acrylic or compatible though. Just a thought. Looks great.

That looks nice my friend!! I've painted a couple myself using the acrylic hobby paint from Walmart.

Good job.
