One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.

Interesting that this article says the California turkey was a separate SPECIES, Meleagris californica. However, current classification lists the other turkeys, eastern, Osceola, Rio, Merriam's, and Gould's, as SUBSPECIES of Meleagris gallopavo. The ocellated turkey is also a separate SPECIES, Meleagris ocellata.
