Just bought a Feather Ridge Hand Jig (need a little help)

I just bought a hand jig from Thad for my 15 year old son. He wants to learn to make mouth calls. We were going to start off simple by making maybe an uncut twin reed and boss hen cut twin reed. Any advice on what thickness latex, combo of latex and stretch would be greatly appreciated. I have no prior knowledge when it comes to making mouth calls and really could use some help. Thanks in advance.
