Also, don't be afraid to call too loud or too often.  Chances are you'll be calling to birds that are a bit distant and they'll need to hear you, so a good loud box call is a useful tool to have.

You've received a lot of good information here. I'll add that in my travels to the Black Hills later was always better for the more consistent weather. I found that walking your legs off was a lost cause due to the amount of roads in the Black Hills. The further you go from one road the closer you'd get to another. Its really tough to get away. Use that to your advantage. Cover ground using the vehicle. Birds are there late in the season but they are spread out. . . that is why covering so much ground is important.

I found early season it was hard to locate birds but when you did, it was a pile of them (still in large flocks). Late season you'd locate lone birds spread thinly across a larger area. I liked that. Good Luck.
