Mr Clark Question (All About Shooting KE and Shot ballistics

I started to pm this question but figure it would be a great thing for everyone to see. I do some custom long range rig building mainly in the 7s for ballistic coefficients but havn't been able to put my finger on the following solution..

Fed HW #6&7s at 1300 vs Hevi 13 6&7s at 1090.

I have their densities and their MV but can't really get an idea on how to figure a BC to plug into a equation to determine drop and Foot pounds of energy at various ranges.. I guess one could get a diameter measurement and do a resistant coefficient.. In the end I was hoping someone could or has already generated a FP chart for say out to 70 yds as a good comparison between the two..

It would seem to me that a Hevi 13- 6 or 7 would be perfecto for out to 40 due to the additonal payload but what if you twitch, sneeze , roll over bent all up crooked like before and need a follow up at 65.. I am betting then that Fed HW 7s with the speed and additional density are better for your Hail Marry.

And Yes I have lost a bird and on film, what a valuable tool that was. May I add that was the last day I ever slung copper plated lead at a Tom. I know this is overkill but I am curious.

being a group of spheres, the drag issue was a tough nut to crack.  A few years ago I put together a spread sheet of numbers.  It shows the Ft Lbs for various shot materials.  It shows energy by shot size and velocity.  PM me your email and I can send you a PDF of it.

Lrtainly like to see it again.

Spheres don't behave like cylindrical objects and some of the things that happen to them in flight are quite interesting and contrary to what our minds would normally think. Men like L.P. Brezny and Bob Brister were real pioneers in ballistics of shotshells and both have numerous books and articles to their credit on the subject.

The engineers at Olin/Winchester published their findings on many aspects of that subject, probably 25 years or more ago but it's still quite relevant today.

Great subject for some reading when you have time and a nice quiet place.

Thanks,
Clark

Hogs chart sheds light on many unanswered questions. A big Great job to you on that brother!

My buddy who is a ballistic genius and whom has developed some software that even Litz applauds is tackling the challenge and trying to come up with a close assessment of the heavies comparing energy to distance at the moment using Hogs data as a starting point. Should be interesting but I doubt that anything commercial is going to come even close to the Fed 7 HW at 1300 beyond 30.

My chart does not take into account drag or rate of deceleration. I created it back when we were having the whole "how many foot pounds does each shot have".  I took shot size/volume and density of the materials to find the Kenetic Energy of each pellet at various speeds. I wish I had the ability to find drag coefficient in a sphere, but it is a little over my head. Would be nice to take some metal plateing and create a tunnel to protect a chrono. I have a design, but no money to get materials or a chrono to be a sacrificial lamb.

Its a fantastic tool brother! Using some common sense one can get a good feel as to what the heavies true capabilities. My buddy should have something as he hasn't given up yet. I appreciate you sending it to me as it validated a lot of my thoughts with out me burning what little brain power I have left this time of year.
