Doctors asking about guns

There is no such requirement through Obamacare to ask about guns. Organizations such as The American Academy of Family Physicians and American Academy of Pediatrics recommend a discussion about gun safety citing studies suggesting increased accidents in homes with firearms. These were published long before Obamacare came about. Point is, keep them secured, teach your kids good firearm safety, and take them hunting/shooting. I practice in Utah. I assume everyone owns guns and have no need to ask the question or put it in the records.

The answer is always  ZERO. I had a nosy bustybody old lady for a neighbor at one time who hated guns. She asked me how many guns I kept in my house and I told her none. She then asked me how many dangerous bullets I kept in the house because she knew I had guns she'd seen me carry them in before.I told her I had 1.She was getting kinda po'd because she knew I was lying and i was having more fun the madder she got.

She said "well I know you've got more than one bullet in that house".I replied "maybe".I said just bust thru that door sometime in the middle of the night and I guess you'll find out.She never spoke to me again about guns.

There are no dangerous Bullets.. only dangerous Shooters

As a physician I tend to agree w/ bird man and the rest of y'all for the most part. It isn't any of a pediatrician's business if you own guns or not. The proper way to approach it would be to discuss home gun safety while discussing issues like wearing a helmet while riding a bike. Our pediatrician gave us some good info on flat screen tv's at our last visit. Apparently ones that aren't mounted are causing head injuries to kids bc they're pulling em off whatever they are sitting on. Bc of the stands they are top heavy. Made sense and my wife and I checked them when we got home. Point being, bringing gun safety up may help accidents from happening but it isn't any of their damn business if you own a gun or not.

Excellant point and I agree 100% with what you said, but that is as far as the conversation needs to go.

Every year at my check up, I get the clipboard questionnaire with the: " do you own any firearms?"  Same answer every year........NO.

Always lie, when you tell the truth, just gives them another reason to say there's too many.  Where's the info going? We know.

Lie,lie,lie!!

I didn't know if it came from obamacare or not but I did know it was on the rise. They will be asking your kids at school also. Last time I was at the doc the nurse was really drilling me about being depressed. When the doc came in I ask him why and she told me they were required to. I don't know if that comes from obamacare or not.

I've been asked numerous times about firearms ownership. I just politely say I prefer not to answer. I've also been asked about wanting to hurt myself. My reply is always "I want to kick myself when I do something stupid..." They just laugh. My present Dr. is a hunter and I don't recall him ever asking any of those questions. You don't need to answer...I think, as one poster said, we mostly just conform. If we're asked, we just answer, even if the question is invasive. I've been more assertive in exercising my right to privacy as I become more educated in the ways of the surveillance state...

My doctor and I are friends. We share hunting pictures with each visit. He knows I have guns. He has never ask me about how many guns I got. His daughter got her first turkey this year. I will ask him about this next time we talk.

My step son wrote a page on "What I did over summer vacation" last year and  guns were mentioned. It was such a big thing that my wife had to be called in on it. They ask her if she felt safe . She said yes that she felt safe BECAUSE we have guns in the house.
