I did this morning. I'm glad I had it but it was annoying holding onto it. It kept me pretty dry though. This is just an old cheap umbrella I spray painted. 
The handle is hollow... What I do is use a 3' metal stake/rod with a "T" welded about 3/4 up the rod. Jam the rod in the ground, put the stake on, and hands-free!
Or, I have sat under trees with lower hanging limbs or near-by brush I can hange the umbrella on and still sit under.
