JMBknvc, that happened here in Ohio about 15-20 years ago a paper company had allowed hunting on thousands of acres and shut it all off and started leasing. They hired a forester out of Alabama and he went to the board and told them they could make 500,000.00 to a million dollars a year off hunting leases. What they didn't plan was the sate pulling their tax abatements for doing it. It cost them, but then they just sold the land to a land management company and it never returned to public hunting.

greencop01, It's not all bad, but it's certainly has took a hit, so I cordially disagree. heck trapping used to be a big deal around here and it is completely gone, due to antis. I can easily account for several thousand acres in my area lost to hunting. I'm more posting as a call to arms.

eggshell, well said, good post and agree.

Was doing some research for an out-of-state hunt and found out that that state lost two public land hunting areas that were leased from timber companies. Loss of public land will increase pressure on other public areas, and that is just from locals in the state. We all need to start getting the state agencies to start purchasing land for public use.
Kansas walk in turkey hunting areas worked for me. Leased private land by the state.

New Mexico banned trapping on public lands a few years ago, ridiculous.  As per usual people only follow the science that aligns with their personal beliefs, over half the state is public land!  However the politics are controlled by a couple large cities!

Actually, that has not happened yet,...but it is apparently about to.  The bill is currently going through the NM legislature and is expected to pass.  Still, as you point out, half of NM is PRIVATE land, so trappers will still have plenty of opportunity to do so,...and fortunately, furbearers don't know where the property boundaries are...

Trapping is just the easiest place to start...I'm sure the ultimate goal is to remove all "animal involved" activities from public land.  Once the gates are open, how do you close them?  I would be very nervous if I lived in a state that was attempting to remove any form of outdoor activity as my favorite could be next.

Understand the state leasing private land for public hunting and think it is good that the state agencies are able to work with private landowners to provide public access. Which is good, but what happens if the lease is not renewed?

There was many. Any how new ones are nice to go to. Especially when the old ones are hammered for a few years.
