Hello men, thinking of ordering these in no 5. Has anyone shot these?what size choke for a 3 ounce load?

Brian Fahs

Bought a couple years ago and hated them. Knocked my sp-10 out of my hands.....
For the record nitro advised me to buy the 4x5x7 heavy shot in a 2 1/2 ounce loads.  I used them for several years but tired of the buffer leaking. Now use tss  hand loads.

Tried the 457 hevis, just dont like the 7s.tested them at 40 and 50. Into pine board. 7s make up most of that load and did not go into board very far. Might try there hevi 456 and some 3 ounce copper loads.

I can't imagine the recoil a 3 oz load has to generate out of a fixed breach gun. Yowza! I would love to see some pattern pictures of those, they would have to literally saturate the target!

With 3 ounces what size choke? I have a kicks 690, rhino 690 or browning 720

I shot the 3 oz. load of 4x5x7.5 copper out of a BPS with a Hastings .690 tube for years starting around 2004 when I first heard of Nitro. I could only get about 230-240 in the 10" at 40 yds but killed a lot of birds with them. Recoil is brutal though and I even adopted an odd way of setting up on the tree to avoid my shoulder getting pinned against the tree when I pulled the trigger. I currently shoot the 4x5x7 Hevi load and it patterns much better averaging 305-315 in the 10" but to be honest I do most of my hunting now with a 20 ga. with Fed HW #7s, lite, handy and deadly out to 50 yds which is the max range I have shot a turkey in several years even with the 10 ga.

I was going to recommend shooting the Fed hw #7.  Sounds like you've got it worked out.  Good luck and keep us posted on the results.

..I shot them in triplex lead , and straight 5 nickel plated lead , I think I shot them in the "economy " load that was 4/5 lead and 7 hs , they lay out a massive pattern , but the recoil is not for the weak of heart, THEY DO NOT SHOOT AS WELL as.....the 2.5 and 2.25 ounce nitros

Shoot the 2.5 ounce in hevishot triplex or straight 7 , and the 2.25 ounce in straight 5 with a rhino 685

I'm taking a break from the handloading this year and am going to shoot the Federal Flight Control Wad with #6 HW.  I was loading 2.5 oz of #6 TSS.
