"Then what becomes of our boasting?"  (Romans 3:27).

Most people like to talk about themselves.  Retelling childhood adventures or family stories from the past over the Christmas ham or Thanksgiving turkey usually doesn't harm anyone.  God gave us mouths to talk.  Speaking about past hardships, humor, and joys is natural.

There are extremes, however.  That's when talking about oneself turns to boasting, and boasting takes on a spiritual dimension.

Having learned that Jesus is the one who makes us right before God, prevents us from speaking as if we were the ones responsible for our salvation.  There's no place for boasting among God's people when it comes to our right standing with Him.  The Lord alone is our sufficiency and supply.  He alone is responsible for any spiritual strength or status we receive.

Everyone is given to boasting a little.  Thankfully, God gives us the best basis for boasting: He loves us without condition.  He gave us His Son as a willing sacrifice for our sin and in exchange He gave us His righteousness.  In Jesus' resurrection, He promises us a resurrection to eternal life beyond our wildest dreams.

Boasting in our own accomplishments?  No thanks.  Let us boast of our God and Savior, and leave ourselves out of the conversation.
