It was pretty bad. It was my first year hunting, and I hunted hard for the first 2 weeks of the season. I was gettig my teeth kicked in daily, so I had a couple of guys in the club take me out to call for me the last week of March. Of course, they were able to call up my bird, I shot (twice) and he died, so I figured I had learned. Then I went back out alone and got my teeth kicked in some more. Finally on April 13 (I think), I went out again with no expectations, pulled out the boxcall, yelped three notes (I now know that whatever sound I made was not a yelp) into a hardwood holler from the ridge above just after daylight. THis bird hammered back, and I walked about 20yds closer. I yelped again three notes, and he cut me off again, and I wasn't too sure about him, so I eased another 20 or 30 yds and checked him again. I got out three more yelps before he cut me off, and I realized he was a lot closer. I sat down just over the ridge from him and he topped the hill just as I got settled. I drew a bead on him and shot. He flopped, I ran up and claimed my prize and returned to camp. Everyone else was still out so I hung him by his hooks in a tree in front of the camphouse for all to see when they drove by. After that day, I was hooked. And now, I wish I would've gotten him mounted in full strut..
