ANYONE ELSE SUFFER FROM GOUT?

I first had a flare up about ten years ago. I had never even heard of gout and thought I broke my ankle. I was diagnosed with gout for the first time. Over the next few years, I would have an occasional flare up every year or so, and then I went a couple of years without any problems. But, I had a bad attack back in October, another in January and now again. All three have hit me in the same spot, the outside of my big right toe. I fear all these gout attacks could be a sign of poor kidney function. I have a check up this Friday and I hope I am a candidate to start taking Allopurinol again to prevent flare ups. They used to give me Colchicine for an attack and a bottle of 30 pills cost less than $5, but now they removed this generic drug off the shelf and replaced it with Colcrys, which is now over $200 for those same 30 pills. It works after a few days, but it makes you sick as a dog after a few doses. Anyone else have trouble with gout? Anyone have any advice for prevention in the future or how to shake an attack? This crap hurts to walk, especially right here in the middle of turkey season.

Had it my knee one time 6 years ago in april.  It swelled up like a volleyball. I never wish gout on anyone cause it hurts! Havent had it since.  I literally cried when I would go turkey hunting. I missed a month of work and finally went to the doc and he drained several viles of fluid off it and said I had gout and gave me colchicine and another drug and said I would have to take it every day the rest of my life. As soon as I got better I quit the medicine and havent had it since. I hope everything goes well for you!

Quit eating so much red meat. Gout is caused by to much uric acid which is found in red meat. Start eating turkey. That just means you need to turkey hunt more. Good luck Jody.

Joe that was my excuse lol. The doctor gave me a list of what to eat and what not to eat. Looked like I would have to live off cherries cause everything else was bad lol

I have had it and it is no fun. I was told that in the health dept of the store that they carry Black Cherry Juice and it would help. I got some and it seemed to help. I did not care for the taste and it is kind of pricey but it does help.

The Doc told me I had it about a year ago, it was mostly in my ankles and it hurt. He put me on Allopurinol, I take one every morning and so far no more flare ups. Hope this helps and good luck!!

God bless,

The past year of my life has been a roller coaster ride with the gout!  I was, and still am in what the Doctor's refer ed to as the "honeymoon" phase of gout.  These is where it will come on at any given time for any given reason!  Until last year I had never experienced gout.  It is in my family, but I never really thought about it.  Then all of a sudden I woke up one morning and, as mentioned above, I thought I had somehow broke my foot!  I sister is a Doctor and so I immediately call her and tell her my symptoms followed by a picture of my very swollen red foot!  And that was the beginning of my gout.  My uric acid level was sky high.  The doctor said he had never seen uric acid levels that high! Anyways, long story short... numerous attacks, doctors, specialist, and ER visits later, I have completely changed  my eating and drinking habits and lost over 50LBS.  All because of "THE GOUT"!  I am doing a lot better and have not had a flare up since deer season.  I take 300 mgs of Allopurinol and Colcrys everyday.  And when I feel an attack coming on I up my Colcrys to three times a day and add Indomethacin three times a day!  Words cannot describe how bad a big flare up hurts!  Best of luck to you brother!

When I first noticed it, I woke up telling my wife "my toe hurts!".  She told me to shut up and go back to sleep.  Well, numerous attacks later and the pain is just as bad each time.   Normally in the joint in my big toe but radiates to the entire ball of my foot.  I swear each time that I'm going to eat better, but damn I love beer and red meat!  I need to reconsider the Alopurinol it really puts a damper on strapping my boots on.

 aspirin should be avoided also.

My father in law suffers from gout. He has never taken a drink of alcohol in his life but he is a dairy farmer and consumes alot of red meat. Gout must be pretty tough cause I have seen it put him flat on his back in tears!!!
Blessed are the peacemakers for they are the children of God.

I've felt your pain guys.  I have had it in my ankle and my whole calf would swell up.  I have kidney problems, but my Doc referred me to an arthritis doctor -  Rheumatologist or something like that.  She told me the longer you let it go untreated, the longer it takes to get over it.  I waited a week thinking it would go away before going to the doc.  The colchisine made me sick as a dog.  It took 2 rounds of prednisone(steroid) to get over it and I've taken allopurinol ever since.  They think shrimp set mine off.  I use to love them, but haven't had one in years now.  I still eat red meat but no shrimp or beer for a long time now and haven't had a flare up in a few years.  Good luck with it - i wouldn't wish gout on anyone.  If you can take the meds,  the prednisone tablets worked pretty quick for me, but i had to take the allopurinol to keep it from coming back.
