I got the idea for charring my strikers from "Turkey Hunting with Charlie Elliott"...I like the way charred strikers grip the call surface. Maybe that's just weird of me

That is an old school trick for a striker that does not grip well and it can be very effective. Most of my strikers I wouldn't dream of doing that to and they don't need it anyway. It's not weird, though.

I char some of my lower end strikers to get a day or two of better grip out of them. However, your higher end striker, you may destroy the design
