Mouth Calls
February 22, 2026, 02:46:50 PM
I haven blown the copper head and red wasp from wood haven for about 14 years. I have tried many other cuts of calls and suck at all of them. I am looking for a call cut like those I can use that is quieter and less raspy. I appreciate any suggestions or tips. Ty

Really like Tipton creek mouth calls and I also just picked up a few pecker wrecker calls at unicoi that I really like that all seem easy to run. Talk to the guy at pecker wreckers he will prob help you figure out what's best for you and give you some tips on what to do to make yourself sound just a lil bit better.

While not the same cut, I highly recommend the hooks executioner or a pinhoti purple combo. Plenty of backbone to cut but don't require much air to play. Pinhoti purple ghost is also pretty good

For me, "quiet and less raspy" are (usually) a function of calls made of thinner material (.003, proph) with the reeds stretched very slightly. You can get really good-sounding soft clucks, yelps, tree calls, purrs, and kee-kees with two-reed and even single reed calls.
If you order calls and don't get the sounds you are looking for, you can often achieve those sounds with very slight modifications to the reeds (cuts, stretching, partial reed removal). Almost any call will get you where you want to be by doing those modifications a little at a time.

Crappie, Welcome to OG first and foremost. GREAT SITE and PEOPLE! After reading your post, the first thing that jumps out at me is you are using 2 different directional airflow mouth calls (Copperhead and Red Wasp). One is center airflow and one is right side. I'm no genius and I hope others, that have more knowledge with this, will help out here. In order for you to get really proficient with the diaphragm, you have to know your channel of airflow. Shane Simpson has a Great YouTube video called Mouth Call Mechanics, that will help you understand your airflow and what cuts are right for your airflow. Check out his video and follow up with any questions you have. This post could get exhaustive so the video should help answer some of your questions. With a little help from others and the video, I believe we can get you on the right track.

I won't give a callers name, I'll let you decide that ---- I'll give a type of call: switch to a single reed for this. They don't take much air, fewer reeds and cuts, so less raspy.
Get a call with more tape than you need, gently trim it to your mouth, you want more covering the roof of your mouth so you don't have to use much air. You also want a very thin reed, it can have a little sag, it doesn't have to be super tight, but tight enough.

To add to bbcoach i dont think it's impossible to use dif air flows. I def do but center or to the left only. I cant manipulate to the right properly. I believe its more an understanding of the way that works
