Trip planning

Well I usually fly by the seat of my pants.  I might decide where I want to go and then I end up in that state.  I'm lucky to know a lot of people many of whom aren't turkey hunters so I ask a lot of questions about where and what time of the season. Honestly I'm enjoying the experience of being new places and instead of trying to kill as many as i can I'm finding myself being content with taking 3-4 birds per year and relaxing.  A couple of trips to one or two states each trip and it's good.

This is it for me. I just like seeing new ground and testing my skills in a new area

sounds like a good plan and it's working for you. That's the approach I want to take 2-3 trips and relax.

Ehh, I ain't exactly what you would call a traveling hunter, but I do to a small extent. For the first time in my life, I have been making plans already. I usually start about February. My boy takes priority, so after I get youth season dates, I can finalize things.

I had my 2026 plans finalized in March for Florida and Texas.

I'm contemplating my travels and planning for next spring. When do you traveling hunters do the same?

I've got plans through this winter and haven't thought about the rest yet, will probably think about next year by the end of Q3

Drew a Wyoming elk tag. Have Arkansas bear. Kansas deer.  Arkansas deer/duck hunting.

I'll start figuring turkey season out during some of the long sits in deer season.

Already in discussions with my hunting buddies as to the possibilities...and who might be interested in participating in a number of hunts on the dart board. As far as confirmations go, however, we probably won't finalize anything until around the start of 2026.

I definitely have two hunts that I will try to arrange regardless of whether anybody else decides to participate or not. Those are not sure bets, though, and if one or both fall through, I will likely replace them with other trips. Those are annual priorities. There is also one new out-of-state hunt that may fall into place but we are waiting to see if the stars align for it to happen.

Being retired, I could hunt a lot more than I do nowadays. I am generally satisfied with hunting my home state and a couple of others each spring. I like to turkey hunt about as much as anybody, but there is a line for me...apparently much sooner for me than some others here...when it becomes tedious rather than fun. 

I have done some guided hunts in the past with good success. I do the hotel deal with the wife she works on her volunteer work and has a meal for me when I get back. It has worked out well. The reason for this is I can't get my buddies interested in road trips for birds. To each his own I guess. I just don't like traveling alone anymore. This year I spent some time in the mountains stayed at a local hotel then the following week at my sons. Gonna branch out to neighboring  states for 26 good Lord willing.

Old Timer why not mentor someone? Often they're game for road trips n such. It'll benefit you both

I have done my share of that in the past. Have mentored many. I have one young man I will be taking out for fall birds. Some are married now with young families and cannot get away. I'm always open to mentoring. Thanks

Still figuring things out myself but I usually wait until season dates are set to decide. Taking in draw due dates as well. It seems that November while in the deer stand I do my most planning.

I already know all the places I want to go over the next several years, it's just deciding what years I go where. I usually start planning beginning of June for the following spring, but don't book anything until December/January. Right now I am combing over all the grounds I may hunt and marking waypoints so they are there when I am ready. I do that year around, it's almost a hobby in itself.
