Annual VA Trip
April 16, 2025, 05:11:10 PM
ZSully made his annual trek down here to VA to hunt with me for a couple days. We had an absolute blast, and put down 3 birds in 2 days. I'll let him tell the stories, he's a much better story teller, but it was a pretty amazing 2 days.

You'll have to give me a bit. I left Virginia and drove the family to Florida for a family vacation with a bunch of friends. We just got in and I need a beer. I'll update later with the stories. It was two absolutely amazing days of hunting.

So here we go!
Day 1:
The morning started with multiple birds gobbling but nothing was real close. So right off the bat we made a move and ran out of cover before we got "in the game". So rather than screw things up, we turned and went after a bird in the timber. That bird shut up and we went on a hike. Stop, set up and call. Nothing. 1.5 miles of nothing. At some point TWyatt mentioned that he felt like we were walking away from the game. He wasn't wrong and I agreed to turn back. We decided to sit on a field edge and ride the last 1.5 hours out. Hope and expectations were low to say the least but out of nowhere I heard a gobble. It was deep but it was a gobble. I hit the slate and bam there's an answer! Fifteen minutes later another call and another answer. This time 60 yards away. We went silent and there he stood for 30 minutes. At 11:15 TWyatt told me that we needed to make something happen since we only had 45 minutes left. So I gave him everything I had and he ate it up until the fourth sequence where there was no response. So we got ready and a stick cracked and I heard a spit and drum. Any second o knew he was stepping into the field.......and he didn't. He came in behind us off my left shoulder. Straight at me and I was handcuffed. About the time I thought I might have to strangle this turkey he hooked a left and parked it behind a tree 12 yards away. Which is where he stayed for 35 minutes. He spit and drummed for 35 minutes straight at 12 yards and all I could see was 4 inches of the left side of his fan. With 10 minutes left I had all but submitted to the fact that I was going to listen to this bird spit and drum as time expired. It was then that TWyatt pulled out some scratching and soft calling and that bird stepped out from behind the tree. I knew it was going to hurt with the gun rested on my bicep but I wasn't letting TWyatt's calling go to waste and cut it loose. 11:57. Talk about a buzzer beater! And we were on the board on day 1. Best part.......we hiked 3.9 miles to kill that bird 400 yards from the truck.
Day 2:
The day started with a debate about who would do the shooting. Both of us were pushing for the other to shoot first.
We took a gamble. Set up on a property where it had been said "nobody kills turkeys here, we will see how good of a hunter you are." Challenge accepted. So we went in blind and set up...... under a hen. We were in the game but couldn't move. The 2 closest gobblers linked up and worked away from us. Right toward the truck. We made a move but only made it 50 yards before a gobble halted the move. We set up and a gobbler came to 60 but hung up and walked away. I wanted to chase but TWyatt claimed there were birds further but more fired up in a different direction. It's now 10 and we're heading towards the truck to chase what we think is a lonely fired up single bird. As we get to where we think we need to be I spot a lonely fired gobbler heading across a field right towards the area we just left. Moral was low but we set up and I let loose on a glass call since the wind picked up and got an answer. It was probably 200 yards away. Not super exciting but we were in the game. I hit the call again and got a second answer. Still not super close but closer. 5 minutes later I let out another sequence and no answer came. I asked TWyatt if he thought they were coming and he almost laughed at me. But then 5 minutes later here come 2 longbeards running. It was like the last lap of a nascar race and I was turned 90 degrees in the wrong direction. But you know who was in position, TWyatt. When the shot went off the first bird folded without so much as a flop. I guess that's what happens at 11 yards. His partner in crime started to split and I hit him with the best fighting purr I could do with no call and adrenaline flowing. It sounded exactly like what I imagine would happen if someone grabbed a turkey by the neck and shook it. It was bad! But it worked. The second bird turned and came back 2 steps and at 18 yards that bird fell as well. And for the second day in a row we killed birds closer to the truck than we started.
What a trip!
